Construction health and safety

Construction sites are constantly changing. From one day to the next, they evolve until they are completed and the site moves into a different phase of its lifecycle.
Fundamentally, this is what makes a construction site the most dangerous place to work. This continual change makes the management of risk a challenge.
The simultaneous involvement of many contractors and sub-contractors, several different trades performing different types of work within close proximity of each other simply adds to the complexity.

Health and safety oversight

We can provide experienced HSE Managers who will undertake various functions including:

  • Ensuring that all aspects of the project HSE plan are followed and managed throughout
  • Ensure that HSE procedures are implemented, review project methodology such as method statements, risk assessments, permits to work etc.
  • Manage a team of Safety Officers
  • Management of onsite activities and ensure that processes are in line with legal requirements and best practice techniques
  • Ensure that subcontractors follow onsite safety plan and procedures

Activities would include, but are not limited to:

Lifting operations, permits to work, electrical safety, safety in design, emergency response, internal inspection and close out process, plant & equipment, risk management & information transfer, traffic management, working at height, temporary works, scaffolding and edge protection, COSHH.

Santia's HSE Managers function would also include proactive monitoring; inspection and tours, meetings and reporting.


Site safety inspections

Our site safety auditors will monitor the safety performance of contractors on site and conduct detailed investigations to specific construction safety issues.  Where employed throughout the lifetime of a construction project, we can present periodic management information to measure overall project and individual contractor health and safety performance, which helps identify positive and negative trends and areas for improvement. 

Construction Design and Management (CDM) coordination

Santia works with customers during the construction design phase where we advise the designers' health and safety risk information, produce pre-construction information packs and review and advise on construction phase health and safety plans.


Santia is an approved provider of the NEBOSH International Certificate in Construction Health and Safety. We also deliver courses that cover working at height, managing contractors, CDM Awareness for clients, designers and principal contractors and asbestos awareness.  Our courses are available as face-to-face classroom courses or as eLearning courses.

Some customers benefit from toolbox talks to help raise awareness and improve hazard communications. Where this has been the case, Santia has identified which concerns require the most attention at any given time and developed and delivered a series of toolbox talks to address the concerns.
