Primark, trading as Penneys in Ireland, is a retail group operating a total of 187 stores in the UK, Ireland (where it trades under the Penneys brand), Holland and Spain. Primark employs in excess of 27,500 people. Primark started working with Santia in 2007, further to discussion relating to the provision of UK and Ireland wide consultancy support, which would effectively form the Primark Safety Team, building relationships within the regional make up of the organisation from store to senior management levels.

We have a hand picked Primark team in place. Consultants are only allowed to work on the contract further to a joint vetting process by the Project Manager and the Primark EHS Executive, to ensure that in addition to the correct professional qualifications and experience which is the foundation of all our consultants, they have an approach and attitude which is a smooth fit with the Primark organisation and service requirements. Where a change in consultant has become necessary, processes are in place for induction and training, to ensure a smooth transition and handover.

We currently provide 5 core consultants, resourced as follows:

  1. North West, Yorkshire and East Midlands (Project Manager and Lead Consultant) – 3 days per week
  2. North London, South and West London and Kent – 2 days per week
  3. South West and South Wales – 2 days per week
  4. North East and Scotland – 2 days per week
  5. Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland – 2 days per week

Our remit includes supporting the development of the safety culture within the highly pressured retail environment, providing true support to the managers within a branch to assist in the effective implementation of the risk management system. We are working with the organisation to raise awareness of safety and safety management, and are taking a flexible and stepped approach to the services being undertaken – with a foundation of a coaching and mentoring approach moving towards an auditing regime.

Consultants assist in promoting and enhancing the current Health and Safety culture through encouraging active interest and acceptance of responsibilities and communicating all of the positive benefits that can be gained through operating a robust Health and Safety Management System throughout Primark’s organisation.

The dedicated Health and Safety Lead Consultant works to co-ordinate and develop all activities associated with Policy, Planning, Implementation and Operation, Checking and Corrective Action, Management Review and Continual Improvement under the Direction of Primark’s EHS Executive.
