Santia call for better enforcement of current asbestos legislation
Last month Unite assistant general secretary Gail Cartmail called for a new law to eradicate asbestos in the UK.
Gail Cartmail told delegates at a conference in London to mark Mesothelioma Action: “We need a new asbestos eradication law requiring the safe, planned removal of all the asbestos that still remains in place across Britain - including a register of all properties which contain asbestos."
“Only time will tell if the residual burden can attributed to the activities of private domestic householders...”
Gareth Towner, asbestos trainer Santia
Gareth Tower, asbestos trainer with Santia thinks that the answer doesn't lie with legislation alone:
"I don’t believe a new law is required. What is required is better enforcement of existing legislation as it applies to the non-domestic sector."
Gareth Towner continued: " Only time will tell if the residual burden can attributed to the activities of private domestic householders, ie evidence-based epidemiology, such that new legislation is required. We need to persuade duty holders that managing asbestos is the right way, and that means training."
